OS X V10.6 Snow Leopard :: Delete Files & Bypass The Trash? discussions.apple.com

Is there a way to completely remove files from my system without moving them to the Trash?  I've read about the Trash, but I'm not clear on EXACTLY how it works. Can I empty A file from the trash or when I click on a file & choose "Emtpy the Trash" does it empty ALL of the files in the Trash or just that one file?  Is there a way to just empty ONLY 1 file from the trash or restore ONLY 1 file from the Trash if so how? ALSO, what are the "rules" for MOVING files rather than COPYing them? I thought files that went from one folder to another on the same drive, were moved & ones that went to different drives were copied. It seems like I've run acrorss instances where that's not how things work. Info: Mac Pro, Mac OS X (10.6.8)

Ubuntu :: Unable To Delete Simple Backup Folder From Trash ubuntuforums.org

I'm a beginner at backing up my Ubuntu system, but I've set Simple Backup to do a backup once a week. I deleted the oldest of these files, but now it's sitting in my Trash and I can't empty it. I get a permission denied error for the folders within the backup folder in the trash, yet I can't restore the folder either - Ubuntu says it 'failed to determine the original path' for the folder. I've just discovered this in Xubuntu Jaunty, but I'm confident the same will happen in any other WM I choose (I have several installed - I like variety ). It's not a huge file, but it's hanging out there and I'd like to get it either deleted or restored. Possibly I oughtn't to have deleted it in the first place (it usually lives in /var/backup, which I can't access except as root). The files, which I probably deleted /as/ root, show up in my user trash rather than root's trash. I found the trash in ~/.local/share/Trash/files, but I'm not sure if just deleting them as root would be a good.

OS X V10.7 Lion :: Finder Search Shows Deleted "phantom" Files discussions.apple.com

I had recently attempted to uninstall Native Instruments FM8, and in an effort to do so, ran searches through my system Library folder and my user Library folder to find anything related to the software and remove them.  Found around 100 preset sound files related to FM8, sent them to the trash and emptied the trash (not securely).  Then after removing every file as listed on NI's website, restarting my computer, and running another Finder search in my Library folder, the sound files I had deleted earlier appear in the Finder search! However, right-clicking the files and selecting Get Info shows no directory for the file, and the files are unable to be deleted or have permissions modified.  I have already used the Disk Utility to repair disk permissions, but these phantom files still remain in my Finder search !  Info: MacBook Pro, Mac OS X (10.7.3)

Ubuntu :: Read-only Root And Can't Edit Fstab ubuntuforums.org

I was unable to boot into Ubuntu 9.1 today because the file system is now read only. When I check fstab, it shows "ro" but I can't change it because it's on a read only file system. I tried umounting the root then remounting with read/write access, but I was unable to umount the root. I also tried booting with a live CD, but all I can find is the root.disk file, I can't see any of the file structure. That's probably just how it is supposed to be, but I'm new to Linux so I found it strange. method to either change the disk to read/write besides this?sudo umount /mount -o remount,rw /The other option would be to somehow mount the disk image while using a live CD so that I can get to the fstab file and edit it.

Software :: Stop OS X From Creating Trash Folder In Volume Root? macosx.com

When I connect my MP3 player (not an iPod ) to the Mac and delete some files, Mac OS X creates a folder .Trashes in the volume root and just moves all the files I intended to delete there. Is there any way to tell Mac OS X that it should not create a .Trashes folder there and remove the files permanently or at least move them to the trash on the local disk?
