Ubuntu :: Unable To Delete Simple Backup Folder From Trash ubuntuforums.org

I'm a beginner at backing up my Ubuntu system, but I've set Simple Backup to do a backup once a week. I deleted the oldest of these files, but now it's sitting in my Trash and I can't empty it. I get a permission denied error for the folders within the backup folder in the trash, yet I can't restore the folder either - Ubuntu says it 'failed to determine the original path' for the folder. I've just discovered this in Xubuntu Jaunty, but I'm confident the same will happen in any other WM I choose (I have several installed - I like variety ). It's not a huge file, but it's hanging out there and I'd like to get it either deleted or restored. Possibly I oughtn't to have deleted it in the first place (it usually lives in /var/backup, which I can't access except as root). The files, which I probably deleted /as/ root, show up in my user trash rather than root's trash. I found the trash in ~/.local/share/Trash/files, but I'm not sure if just deleting them as root would be a good.

OS X V10.6 Snow Leopard :: Delete Files & Bypass The Trash? discussions.apple.com

Is there a way to completely remove files from my system without moving them to the Trash?  I've read about the Trash, but I'm not clear on EXACTLY how it works. Can I empty A file from the trash or when I click on a file & choose "Emtpy the Trash" does it empty ALL of the files in the Trash or just that one file?  Is there a way to just empty ONLY 1 file from the trash or restore ONLY 1 file from the Trash if so how? ALSO, what are the "rules" for MOVING files rather than COPYing them? I thought files that went from one folder to another on the same drive, were moved & ones that went to different drives were copied. Ubuntu :: System Doesn't Recognize Share Files From Windows ubuntuforums.org

I have Ubuntu 10.04 in my laptop and at the same time I have Windows 7 (partitioned disk). I use mostly Ubuntu, but I need windows for some stuff. I want to share files of windows with Ubuntu (is weird but when I installed Ubuntu never gave me the option "share files from windows", I dunno why). Anyway, I can see the disk in Ubuntu, and I can see the folder /Documents and settings/, that creates windows by default with my files. However, the route is too long to arrive there from Ubuntu using the Terminal. I created a shadow link using lndir to arrive to my files easier. It works fine, however, sometimes when I go to the files using this route, these are lightened in red, and when I try to enter to one of these folders, the system doesn't recognize it. After a while, these are in blue and I can go in them. Why it is happening?. What I did Is the "correct" way to do it?.

Debian :: Share Home Among Distributions - Store Files All In "/home" Folder Of Extended Ubuntu Part... forums.debian.net

Installed Ubuntu along with Debian on my Notebook and use Grub Manager to choose between them on startup. Since i like Debian now a lot (in past days it was a very hard system to handle, but there has been some progress i noticed), i have to change some things (want Debian as main system now) For Ubuntu i have: (was meant to be main system on Notebook) "/", "/home" and a "swap" partition, but since i am now going to use mainly Debian, i wanted to store my files all in the "/home"-folder of my extended Ubuntu partition (has much more space available) not in the "/home" folder of the Debian system. So i want both (Debian and Ubuntu) to use the same extended partition ("/home") which i created for Ubuntu to save their files like downloads, videos, and so on.

Ubuntu Installation :: 10.10 Install Manager Causes Constant Reboot ubuntuforums.org

I downloaded Ubuntu 10.10 in November 2010 and used the windows installer to install it next to my Windows 7 OS. I have a Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bit. I am a beginner user and only Ubuntu when I need to run the terminal and text editor to create and test simple C++ files. Today, the install manager requested that I install critical updates so I left the default selected files and upgraded. The it asked to restart the system so I said yes. When it restarts it asks which OS to load: 1. Windows 7 2. Ubuntu So I select Ubuntu then it displays some message about NTFS and quickly reboots (so i can't get to read the remaining message) the PC again. Uusually it would ask me to select the version of Ubuntu to load. Now my PC will only laod up Windows 7 so I can't get back into Ubuntu to dianose the problem.

Ubuntu Security :: All Files And Folders Are Read Only? ubuntuforums.org

I've recently upgraded to 10.04 and have noticed that all the files or folders I've been creating recently are read only. I can manipulate the folders on my ubuntu system itself and create new entries, folderes, subfolders, and save files. IE a payment receipt in pdf format. However if I then try to move or copy any of these to my DROBO (data storage device) the file gets the LOCK Icon on it and becomes read only. If it is a subfolder I can no longer copy to it and if it's a regular file, say a pdf or flv I can't modify it. Attempting to change the file permissions on either my ubuntu desktop or any other folder works but once it goes to the drobo I lose the ability to change it off of ---. Again, this was all working fine before doing the upgrade to 10.04. Yes I did do a clean install to 10.04.

Ubuntu :: No Dual Boot - Windows Overwrite Grub File ubuntuforums.org

I've recently left Windows behind for good and have come to Linux (Ubuntu.) However, I've run into problems after trying to dual boot windows 7 and ubuntu. When I restarted my computer, I got a black screen with white text reading "Minimal BASH-like line editing is supported". I have the Ubuntu live cd and was able to try Ubuntu without having to install it, but after I put in a flash drive with Windows 7 on it, the Ubuntu CD has stopped working entirely. The weird thing is, the computer that I installed Ubuntu on, already had Ubuntu and Windows 7 on it. And every OS was booting successfully. The reason I deleted the Ubuntu that was already on the computer, is because there were many different versions. I wanted to do a clean sweep and only have Ubuntu and Windows 7 installed on the computer. I know that if you try to dual boot Windows 7 and Ubuntu, Windows will overwrite the GRUB file, making it unable to dual boot.

Ubuntu :: Error While Loading Shared Libraries /lib/libsepl.so.1 - Cannot Read File Data ubuntuforums.org

I've created quite a predicament with my desktop installation and would prefer to be able to salvage it instead of having to reformat/re-install Ubuntu. Quite a lot happened and here's my best recollection: - My Ubuntu installation stopped working and I could not get the desktop to load. - I backup up my entire home directory by creating a zip file along with other small zip files. I used Alt + Del + F1 to get the CLI to do this. - I then did different things trying to get the desktop to load. - I did a apt-get upgrade, to try and get it to work; this was not sucessful. - Working through several dependency issues I finally got sudo apt-get ubuntu-desktop upgrade to work, but it did not finish completely. I started to get out of memory errors. I am assuming this was because too much hard drive space was taken up by the zip files I had created -I could not boot and do anything properly after that. Every attempt to modify the filesystem (to free up space) results in an error "Read Only File System". The root file system was not being mounted and I would see root@none on the CL - Looking on the boot loader I now have Ubuntu 9.10 2.6.24-generic installed - I burnt a new installation of Ubuntu 10.4 LTS - Using Live CD I tried to see if I could free up some space and get the system back to more stable state, However this was NOT sucessful. I tried to mount my drive by sudo mount -t ext3 <dev> <dir> but I keep getting the following error: error while loading shared libraries: /lib/libsepol.so.1: cannot read file data: Input/output error

Unfortunately, my Windows computer belongs to my company or I would just switch to Ubuntu altogether. I have posted a couple of screenshots of what I see in Windows, my GParted partitions, and the options that I have enabled for the folder I am trying to share. Below are my fstab and my samba files from Ubuntu. I am sure that this is just some rookie mistake as I am new to Ubuntu. It certainly seems that this should be easy, but I just can't get it. # /etc/fstab: static file system information. # # <file system> <mount point> <type> <options> <dump> <pass> [code]...

Ubuntu Installation :: Blank Screen Installed Using Text Mode But Still Same ubuntuforums.org

I'm some what new to ubuntu and i would really like to start using it as my main operating system and get rid of windows. The first problem i face here is that I am unable to install Ubuntu using the normal gui mode.As soon as i select the option to install ubuntu the files starts loading and then the screen goes blank.. but the monitor is still live. So i installed ubuntu using the text based installer.. everything went fine, i installed the system and at boot loader i selected my Os but still the old demon comes in "Blank screen". I've tried all the related forums and tried all the options best to my knowledge, but its still the same.. I am not even able to get a command prompt/terminal. I know that this is a problem with my ATI (i can hear the sighs!!!!!) video card. Now I know that Ubuntu is being loaded cause i can hear the welcome sound of Ubuntu(drums sound).

Software :: Stop OS X From Creating Trash Folder In Volume Root? macosx.com

When I connect my MP3 player (not an iPod ) to the Mac and delete some files, Mac OS X creates a folder .Trashes in the volume root and just moves all the files I intended to delete there. The only reason to delete files is of course freeing some space... and to free it I have to empty the system trash (which is not good). Is there any way to tell Mac OS X that it should not create a .Trashes folder there and remove the files permanently or at least move them to the trash on the local disk?
